Toshiba gave up on its HD-DVD technology in January this year, but it seems is firmly holding onto its patents.
Reports out of Taiwan state that some well-regarded local manufacturers
of optical discs had attempted to acquire certain blue-laser patents
from Toshiba in February this year but Toshiba had declined to sell.
The purchase attempt, says the report, came from members of the Taiwan
Information Storage Association, which was in contact with Toshiba.
The Economic Daily News stated: “Toshiba has cooperated with Tsinghua
University and other research organizations in China to develop CBHD
(China Blue High-definition Disc), a blue-laser standard specifically
for the large market in China, and more than 90% of CBHD technology is
based on HD DVD patents, EDN pointed out. This is probably the main
reason behind Toshiba's turning down the plan to purchase HD DVD
patents from Taiwan,” EDN indicated.
