Internet TV platform Zattoo is offering with immediate effect a premium service whereby television channels can be received in improved picture quality.
The service, which allows the live-streams of conventional TV channels
to be watched in full screen format on the computer, is commencing in
Zattoo’s home country Switzerland for SFr3.75 (€2.30) per month. Other
countries, including Germany, are to follow. The company, which has
more than 80,000 users in Switzerland, is reacting to the requests of
its users, it says. “Many, but not all, of our viewers are willing to
pay for an improved picture quality,” said Francesco Vass, head of
free-to-air and pay-TV at Zattoo.
The basic version, which shows channels in lower picture quality, will
continue to be free of charge. The Swiss “high quality” package offers
the 20 most popular channels in full TV resolution with a data rate of
1.5 Mbit/s, including public broadcaster Schweizer Fernsehen,
commercial broadcasters and channels from neighbouring countries.
Subscribers to Swiss telco Swisscom who surf the net using its fibre
optic network (VDSL), receive the premium service free of charge.
Zattoo’s basic package comprises 74 channels, each transmitted with 500
kbit/s. As the next step, Zattoo wants to add pay-TV channels to its
offer.
