Warner Bros will trial releasing its movies in Korea online before they get a DVD release, hoping to counter rampant piracy while taking advantage of the country’s high level of broadband penetration.
Movies will be available to download from an on-demand site two weeks
prior to their DVD release. The service will be tested in the coming
weeks, although no specific titles have been announced.
Thomas Gewecke, President, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, said:
"Korea is the ideal market for us to expand our digital distribution
strategy. There is already a broad base of consumers who are immersed
in technology and very comfortable getting movies through
video-on-demand or similar services, and I am proud of the team that
made it possible for us to be the first U.S. studio to offer this
service to fans of Warner Bros. movies in Korea."
Around 94% of South Korean homes have broadband connections and over
47% of people had downloaded movies from the internet at least once,
according to the Korean Film Council.
