Tandberg Television has won two key Korean contracts, as the country’s telcos gear up for the launch of linear IPTV broadcasting.
KT has selected a Tandberg IPTV head end for its Mega TV IPTV service.
Mega TV has over 700,000 subscribers to its existing on-demand offering
and will use Tandberg’s EN8090 HD MPEG4 AVC (pictured, above) and EN8030 SD MPEG4 AVC
encoders. The head end expansion follows a competitive tender earlier
in the year.
SK Broadband, Korea’s second-largest broadband provider, is also
deploying a Tandberg IPTV head end, also including HD and SD MPEG4 AVC
encoding. SK Broadband (formerly Hanaro Telecom and the IPTV market
leader) intends to introduce 30 standard-def and 10 high-def channels
initially.
As well as the EN8090 and EN8030 encoders, Tandberg is also supplying
its iPlex for IP multiplexing and RX1290 SD/HD integrated receiver
decoders to SK Broadband.
Dr HS Kim at SK Broadband, said: “Broadcast television is a significant
new service for SK Broadband and will improve the IPTV experience and
help us grow our business. We want to provide a feel-good factor for
consumers watching our services and therefore set very high
expectations for picture quality as well as bandwidth usage. Tandberg
Television has demonstrated its leadership in MPEG-4 AVC HD and SD
compression and we are pleased to work with them on this exciting
project.”
