Spain second in IPTV

telefonicareportlaunch.jpgSpain ranks second on the list of European countries with highest IPTV penetration according to a recent report "The Information Society in Spain 2008", launched by a bevy of Telefónica's management (pictured, left).

The report was unveiled by Telefónica on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the liberalization of Spain's telecommunications market with the passing of the Telecommunications General Law in 1998.

One of the report's main highlights is that young Spaniards already spend their time 22% more surfing on the internet than watching television.

Another important point is the underlying of the extension of optic fiber to the home an essential infrastructure for the future of the Digital Home. This is technology in which Telefónica is highly interested and is working on the network after having been recently given the green light by the Telecommunications Market Commision (CMT) provided it's open to competitors.

The report also underlines the 250,000 subscribers already existing in Spain for mobile TV services.

And for the next year the report remembers the government's Plan Avanza for the implementation of the Information Society will allocate EUR6,500 million for the extension of DTT's coverage as well as to push investments in high speed networks.
